II INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR
Histories of the
Post-Emancipation
in the Atlantic World
130 YEARS OF BRAZILIAN ABOLITION
INTRODUCTION
In 2018, we will reach the 130-year mark of the abolition of slavery in Brazil. The date articulates a series of meanings attributed, questioned and disputed by different social subjects of the past and the present; offering enough reasons for holding wide public debates about it. The scenario also allows the reflections to go beyond the rigid limits suggested by the May 13 chronological framework, as well as to go beyond the specificities of the Brazilian experience.
Facing this challenge, the Emancipations and Post-Abolition Working Group (GTEP), affiliated to the National History Association (ANPUH), created in 2013, is pleased to invite undergraduate and graduate students, teachers of primary education and Higher Education and other researchers to participate in the II International Seminar: Histories of the Post-Emancipation in the Atlantic World - 130 years of Brazilian Abolition. The event will take place between May 15 and 18, 2018, at the premises of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV), in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro.
We encourage, in particular, proposals that dialogue with the following topics:
I. Memory and Public History of slavery and freedom;
II. Racism and anti-racism in historical perspective;
III. Intellectualities and black activism;
IV. Trajectories and practices of sociability: race, class, gender and sexualities;
V. Historiographical balance of post-abolition;
VI. Public reparation policies for Atlantic slavery;
VII. Re-education of ethnic-racial relations.
The works can be submitted in the following categories: “Paper”, “Poster − Scientific Initiation”, “Poster − Innovative Practices of Teaching History”. The event also provides for the participation of listeners. Check full instructions for submitting in each modality through applications.
