II INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR

Histories of the

Post-Emancipation

in the Atlantic World

130 YEARS OF BRAZILIAN ABOLITION

BACKGROUND

Between May 14 and 16, 2012, the International Seminar: Histories of the Post-Emancipation in the Atlantic World was held in the Department of History of the Federal Fluminense University (UFF). The three days of long and lively discussions resulted in the publication of volumes  1 ,  2  and  3  of Histórias do Pós-Abolição no Mundo Atlântico [Histories of the Post-Emancipation in the Atlantic World], e-books organized by the teachers Beatriz Loner, Carolina Viana Dantas, Hebe Mattos, Karl Monsma and Martha Abreu.

The following year, during the XXVII National Conference of Anpuh (Natal, 2013), a decisive step was taken: the creation of the Emancipations and Post-Abolition Working Group (GTEP). Since then, different activities have been undertaken with the aim of developing and consolidating this field of studies, especially the thematic panels at regional and national Anpuh meetings.

The accumulation produced during this time has certainly generated the need to promote a new specific assembly, a moment of concentrated effort to gauge and reflect on the progress made and to establish future prospects.

Thus, at the last meeting of the National Working Group, on the XXIX National Conference of Anpuh in Brasilia, we assumed the commitment to hold the II International Seminar: Histories of the Post-Emancipation in the Atlantic World.

We believe that this will effectively be a unique opportunity to strengthen and broaden the network of historians dedicated to the study of subjects, trajectories and processes performed after – and before – the Abolition of slavery in Brazil and other parts of America, as well as Africa and Europe.
